THE AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF WORTHINESS
KUMUWUKI / BIG WAVE NATIONAL REGIONAL ARTS CONFERENCE
OCOTBER 2012
This collaborative project involves two friends who have practices located in performance and theatre; Emma Beech and Tessa Leong. Together, we are the Australian Bureau of Worthiness. We spend compact periods of time investigating places and their sense of worth. We do this via asking people in the street and community groups “What makes your day worth it?” From these responses and our own observations we develop a stage show that presents our findings. Typically this whole process takes about two weeks, including performances. Aside from contributing to shared conversations one of my major roles is to direct visual components and play DJ on two overhead projectors, often including lots of drawings that I make of the place that we are in.
For our most recent iteration we were invited to be part of the Kumuwuki / Big Wave National Regional Arts Conference, held in Goolwa, South Australia, October 19 – 21. We had a great time meeting Goolwa and presenting research to locals and visitors over the weekend. It was also a great privilege to see and meet some of the other great people attending the conference. A big thanks goes out to Steve Mayhew and the wonderful Kumuwuki team for all of their support.
