As part of Carclew’s ongoing Pom Pom project, a youth arts centre located in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, I spent some time developing and executing a mural project with a number of participants. Over a period of weeks we workshopped a range of mural skills and approaches whilst brainstorming a number of potential themes. We settled on the theme of big cats which gave us a great selection of patterns to work with and the ability to apply a fairly concise range of colours to our outcome. During a week-long work period of the school holidays we worked together to complete the 30 metre long mural which saw keen young artists getting busy with background acrylic painting and detailed aerosol patterns. The final work has brightened up an otherwise dull car park and given this group of budding young artists the satisfaction of seeing their beginning drawings transformed into oversized paintings that liven up their neighborhood.
