ADELAIDE FESTIVAL CENTRE – SALA RESIDENCY – FRED WILLIAMS MURRAY RIVER MURALS

I am happy to announce that I have been awarded the annual South Australian Living Artist festival’s artist-in-residence at the Adelaide Festival Centre which will culminate in outcomes during August of this year. The basic premise of my residency is to respond to Fred Williams’ Murray River murals which are displayed in the foyer of the building and were commissioned as part of the original Festival Centre build. I am a great fan of Williams’ painting and have always been enamored by the story of his houseboat journey down the Murray that he took in order to develop studies for the work. The image below, taken in 1972, is one that has always captured my imagination.

I plan to undertake a similar journey in preparation for making my own work, though approach will be a little less glamorous. I am currently in the market for a rudimentary tinny with which to do some exploring. This residency period is also likely to feed into a bunch of future outcomes that I have been pondering. Specifically, I have been fantasizing about building some kind of pedal powered cross between a paddle steamer and a tinny – and the pursuit of a creative river journey of some kind.

Congratulations also go out to Jessie Lumb, Joy Levins and Nike Sperou who will also be undertaking SALA residencies this year. More details and a full media release can be found here –
